What is Spray Foam Insulation ?

Spray foam insulation is a flexible insulation material, which can be used as an alternative to fibreglass, cellulose, foam boards, and other materials.

Also known as insulation of polyurethane foam, it is poured as a liquid onto a surface where it increases in size and thickness. Hardening into a solid material, it produces a barrier that prevents the leakage of heat and offers additional protection of the structure. It can also be used to insulate roofs, attics, walls and floors with spray foam insulation.

Even small cavities can be filled with spray foam to create a strong barrier to the air. Foam typically increases the volume of the liquid to 30 to 60 times after spraying. It provides excellent resistance to air penetration (unlike blankets and batts that can leave air pockets and bypasses, superior to loose-fill types). The costs of spray foam insulation, on the other hand, can be higher than traditional insulation and most types of foam emit toxic fumes when burning, except cementitious foams.

What are the Types of Spray Foam Insulation ?

Open-cell and closed-cell spray foam insulations are the two kinds of spray foam. Every style is useful, depending on the insulation needs and costs. Open-cell foam means the cells are broken, and air fills the gaps inside the material. And open-cell foam in nature is smoother and less rigid than closed-cell foams, in which the cells form a cohesive structure.

The closed-cells retain their form as they are packed with gas, making them stronger and better isolators. If external forces are not likely to stress the foam, there is no need to adopt a solid shape and, if you work with a limited budget, then open-cell foam is the better option.

While open-cell foam is limited in its insulation capacity, closed-cell foam can vary significantly in density and insulation factors. Density is directly related to insulation strength and is determined by measuring one cubic foot of the content of the foam.

The open-cell foam weighs between 0.4 and 0.5 lbs/Cu. Ft, with a factor of around 4 per inch for R-value. Closed-cell foam with high density may be produced between 1.7 and 2.0 lbs/Cu. Ft. The higher density not only allows moulding for light structural or decorative uses, but it also offers R-values of more than 5.8 per inch.

The cost variations are not only dependent on the components, but also on the methods of implementation. Open-cell foam can be applied and installed easily using a low-cost water-based process. In addition, open-cell foam uses more room per weight (i.e., it’s less dense), so filling a space requires less material.

Closed-cell foams allow R-value blowing agents to be correctly applied, are heavier and are therefore more expensive and difficult to mount. Insulation of the closed cells is not often available. This should be taken into account when picking spray foam insulators.

How Does Spray Foam Insulation Work ?

Open cell and spray foam with a closed-cell create an air seal while insulating your home. The insulation has many advantages including sound control, mould growth deterrence, and airflow reduction while preventing cold floors and drafts. It can also help to reduce your energy costs. Spray foam insulation affects both the convection (airflow) and conduction (heat transfer) that affects the comfort and energy efficiency of your home. The overall job of insulation is to resist heat flux into or out of an area.

It keeps your house warm in winter, and cool in summer. For many homes, air leakage is a problem and this contributes to the energy loss from the home as well as the discomfort of drafts, cold floors and icy spots. Some homes can fill two blimps with enough air each day, so imagine the impact on cooling and heating bills.

Open-cell spray foam insulation often expands from its original size by up to 100 times to occupy every part of the cavity. Air can leak with traditional insulation, such as cellulose and fibreglass, through gaps and spaces that aren’t filled. The use of spray foam will contribute to an energy-efficient, draft-free home.

What are the Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation ?

The spray foam insulation is non-toxic during and after building. The spray foam insulation we use does not contain CFCs, HCFCs or other materials which deplete ozone.

Studies show that spray foam insulation significantly reduces the impact of residential, commercial and industrial products on the atmosphere and resources.

Simply put, the benefits of using spray foam insulation far outweigh the disadvantages of manufacturing the raw materials used to isolate spray foam. What's more, applying the spray foam onto an existing roof can avoid re-roofing.

Enhanced Air Quality

Spray foam insulation is of significant benefit, as it is an option which is non-toxic. No hazardous chemicals, such as formaldehyde, are released from the chemical blend into your home or workplace. A significant advantage is the ability of spray foam insulation to remove indoor allergens, such as dust, mould, mildew, pollen and other contaminants.

These allergens don't only move into your house or office through open doors and windows, but instead find their way into your walls. Air quality is often compromised by pest waste, but insects and rodents are not attracted to spray foam, as it is not suitable as food or shelter. If you want insulation that reduces allergy and asthma symptoms and minimises environmental contamination, consider insulation from spray foam.

Lower Cooling and Heating Bills

Your bills for heating and cooling will be much lower as a direct benefit from the improved HVAC efficiency that Icynene spray foam insulation makes possible. In addition, reducing the workload of your heating and refrigeration system will allow you to "right-size" your HVAC systems. In other words, once you eliminate air leaks, you may find that your existing HVAC equipment is actually more powerful than your home needs. If this proves true, you can explore options to upgrade to equipment that fits better with your home and which will cost less to operate.

Enhanced HVAC Efficiency

Owing to its ability to expand and fill all cracks and crevices, Icynene spray foam is designed to eliminate air leakage. As a result, it helps to prevent cool air from escaping and warm air from coming into your home during the summer months. In comparison, Icynene spray foam helps retain heat indoors during the winter months and prevents cold air from seeping through cracks in your home. As a result, your HVAC system will not end up working overtime to maintain a reasonable temperature in your home.

Provides an Airtight Barrier

Spray foam insulation produces an airtight shield, which is twenty-four times less air-permeable than other products. This outperforms other types of insulation since it can easily stretch and fill certain crevices that could otherwise have been left uncovered.

The resistance efficiency of spray foam insulation is R-6, which, interestingly, is the highest industry level.

Adds Strength to Structural Frames

The weight of the frames supporting the building determines how solid the building is. Some kinds of insulation do little to improve the ability of the building to stand up to Mother Nature's wrath.

By eventually being one with the surface on which it is sprayed, spray foam adds to the resilience of building structures, as it stretches and fills every opening and crevice.

If spray foam insulation is installed properly, it will not deteriorate over time. It can last for the lifetime of the house. Its use on roofs can also last for more than 30 years, with sufficient long-term maintenance. The spray foam insulation adheres extremely well to virtually all substrates and keeps its rigidity once dry.

Reduces Moisture

Humidity that comes through the walls of your home is mostly from the rain. By sealing the walls with spray foam insulation, you can reduce the amount of moisture that comes into your house and stop mould and fungus damage that can be caused by moisture.

Constant R-Value

While there may be questions about insufficient installation as some spray foam installations do not meet requirements, one of the main advantages of this approach is that over time it does not lose its R-value.

What Brands Offer Spray Foam in the UK ?

Icynene spray foam insulation products are a collection of smooth, durable spray foam insulation products offering energy savings of up to 50% or greater relative to alternative home insulation materials.

In contrast to competitive products, Icynene is also the only spray foam solution in the industry that can claim BBA, IAB and ETA certifications. Icynene has the highest vapour resistivity when placed side by side with any lightweight foam on the market, and has the lowest moisture content. Icynene brands have been consistently developed and checked for greater efficiency in a number of categories, including:

  • Energy performance;
  • Sound transmission;
  • Emissions;
  • And more.

Lapolla spray foam insulating materials will seal your home from air and moisture contamination, save on high energy bills and help protect your family’s health from moulds, airborne toxins and allergens. In and out of a home, air moves through every hole, crack, and crevice. About 33% of air travels through walls, ceilings and floors. The addition of an advanced insulation system is required to achieve optimum building performance. Lapolla is the cutting-edge type of insulation.

Lapolla spray foam insulation will maximise a homeowner’s investment by closing the building in an envelope to prevent the leakage of conditioned indoor air and to prevent unconditioned air from entering a home. Air movement inside and outside a building is a leading cause of high energy bills. Mechanical systems run continuously to heat and cool buildings, and reduce extreme temperature variations. Prevent the overuse of the mechanical systems for lower energy bills.

Generated by BASF Canada, the WALLTITE® way increases the efficiency of building insulation to another level. It had been rolled out in selected core markets internationally. WALLTITE ® is an airtight insulation system based on polyurethane foam spray, which is an ideal solution to improve the energy efficiency of different types of buildings.

WALLTITE is a polyurethane spray-applied violet, closed-cell, medium density foam that meets the requirements of CAN/ULC S705.1. WALLTITE provides many functions inside the building envelope, including acting as a radon/soil gas barrier, drainage plane, water barrier, insulation, vapour barrier, air barrier network, air barrier material, and humidity proofing in lesser-quality applications.

WALLTITE CM01 has a similar GWP-like mineral wool batt insulation and takes slightly less space than semi-stiff mineral wool and XPS.

What are the Main Building Applications for Spray Foam ?

house spray foam insulation

House Insulation

Once spray foam is set, it's not compressible, which means it can help strengthen the foundation of the property.

Spray foam is suitable for plugging holes and cracks. Because of its high R-value, it has better energy efficiency than other insulation products and offers excellent insulation. Closed-cell spray foam often removes water vapour, forming a moisture barrier. This means it will help avoid moisture and leakage issues, dissuading the growth of moulds.

cavity walls spray foam insulation

Cavity Walls

To avoid draughts and boost the efficiency of the building, spray foam insulation can be applied to any surface, making it ideal for cavity walls. Since the reactive two-component mixture can expand once blown, the best way to apply it is spray foam insulation.

Injected closed-cell foam systems not only provide superior cavity insulation, but also have adhesive bonding properties which can improve the structural stability of any treated structure. It also helps bind both the inner and outer leaves to give strength to the building.

window spray foam insulations

Window Insulation

A common use for expanding foam is around windows and doors. Unless well-sealed, windows can be a major source of heat and energy leakage and an obstacle to keeping a home cool in warmer climates.

Foam insulation, typically in the form of spray polyurethane foam (SPF), works by filling the gap between the window and its frame or between the frame and the wall and then solidifying into a vapour-tightened, insulating seal.

underfloor spray foam insulation

Underfloor Spray Foam

Sometimes it makes sense to separate the board. For example, in cold climates, floor insulation above a crawl space is often more energy-efficient than insulating foundation walls.

Under-the-floor insulation is typical of crawl spaces, but is vulnerable to the common challenges above. A simpler alternative is to spray the crawl space. Spray foam insulation can be applied to the crawl space walls and a special moisture-resistant foam insulation can coat the crawl space floor.

Suspended Timber Floor spray foam insulation

Suspended Timber Floor

Due to their lightweight and durable nature, certain materials are very suitable for the insulation of suspended floors in a house or a commercial building.

With its completely breathable properties and a design suitable for each use, open-cell spray foam insulation is a good solution. It helps avoid cold floors and drafts and contributes to thermal comfort. Simply stated, the ideal timber floor insulation device is spray foam.

Dry Lining Spray Foam Insulation

Dry Lining Insulation

Icynene Classic is the ideal insulation when new dry lining studs are placed on the inside of the exterior walls and the foam retains its original ability to close and isolate each crack to remove the cold timber or metal grips.

Ifspray foam insulation compacts air tightly on walls and gaps and can be smoothed so that dry lining can be added easily. Our spray insulation and dry lining mix completely prevents cold spots and draughts with a smooth finish. It'll also offer better acoustics and won't sag.

Wall Insulation

Most houses, including new buildings, may lack adequate insulation. Their walls require spray foam insulation. Spray foam is used as a growing shield. It not only offers a superior insulation device when used as continuous insulation over wall sheathing, but also strengthens the remaining wall assembly.

Medium-density spray foam can be mounted reliably at very controllable thicknesses. That means a smooth, consistent surface ready to be cladded.

flat roof spray foam insulation

Flat Roof Insulation

It's been a concern for builders and homeowners alike since flat roofs arrived. Flat roofs are waterproof, difficult to clean, and can have water standing water.

Making an unventilated area and sealing the 4 to 5-inch spray foam region is now easier and more reliable. Foam roofing can produce 30% or more energy savings compared to alternative roofing systems. The roof would have paid for itself in just five years.

ceiling spray foam insulation

Ceiling Insulation

Using spray foam insulation will significantly reduce energy costs and limit sound leakage in your cathedral ceiling.

Your roof now has a smooth air barrier that will conserve huge amounts of energy along with a strong R-value. Your roof can now significantly limit sound and deter rodents. Your household will also experience substantially improved air quality.

Conservatory spray foam insulation

Conservatory Insulation

If your conservatory is too cold in winter and too hot in summer, you can say goodbye to intense heat, blinding brightness, hot sunshine or winter chills that are typically associated with a conservatory. Stop this with an isolated conservatory roof from Ifspray.

Improve your conservatory with spray foam insulation so that you can use the space throughout the year.

Use advanced conservatory insulation to retain heat and remove draughts, and save money on heating bills.

parking garage spray foam insulation

Parking Garage

Spray foam insulation systems are the best choice for parking garage floor slabs and concrete ceilings inside. Seamless, spray-applied, you just remove the clips and easily install.

As a long-lasting, energy-saving, engineered thermal barrier, spray foam is the most affordable and effective solution on the market.

Owners of multi-family structures and estate managers welcome closed-cell spray foam to remove garage ceilings. The energy efficiency, and moisture and condensation protection of closed-cell spray foam outweigh all traditional applications.

pipe spray foam insulation

Pipe Insulation

Many homeowners know that their walls, floors, roofs and basements should be protected, but one thing that homeowners still neglect is their drains. Pipe insulation can prevent freezing and bursting of the pipes, which can cause a number of problems in your home.

Usually, foam spray pipe insulation is used in crawl spaces or similar places where freezing is very dangerous. Therefore, it works well in mild climates.

Besides freezing and bursting, insulating pipes can minimise heat loss in hot water pipes. This will help increase water temperatures by 2–4 degrees and can help you save on energy costs to shut down the water heater.

roof spray foam insulation

High consistency, high-density closed-cell foams can be used on nearly any roof. The foam is spread by spraying on a smooth, monolithic surface which insulates and fully covers all joints, bolt heads, fastenings, etc. As well as protecting your property from the cold, spray foam roof insulation will also reduce the amount you pay on your power bills.

shed spray foam insulation

Shed Insulation

Sheds can be intensely cold and humid during the winter months, whether made of wood or concrete, or very hot and humid in summer. Condensation can build up against the walls, and trickle or drip down onto the contents of the shed.

Spray foam insulation should help to keep the interior of the shed at a relatively steady air temperature during different seasons. The best insulating medium for buildings, including sheds, is spray foam insulation. Spray foam insulation is recommended for any concrete construction in the UK and the EU.

external spray foam insulation

External Insulation

Spray foam fits perfectly between any sheathing you already have on the outside walls.

External foam insulation systems require rigid foam insulation (polyisocyanurate, EPS or XPS) between 2 and 6 inches outside the wall framing. To avoid water infiltration, the window openings, door openings and roof edges are measured and a finish added.

loft spray foam insulation

Spray foam stretches, fills all cavities and voids and completely eliminates leakage and air infiltration. The Icynene spray foam insulation system is the most suitable form of insulation for your loft and attic areas, in both new buildings and existing houses.

Spray foam can also be used on horizontal attic walls, providing more than 50% of energy efficiency under all conditions, more than any other industry insulation.

It matches the loft temperature with the rest of the house, when applied to roof rafters. This minimises the problem of the interaction of warm air with cold air to form condensation.

Timber Frame Construction

Timber Frame Construction

The timber frame framework style does not lend itself to thermal insulation requirements of contemporary housing and building codes. Luckily, spray foam insulation provides several high-quality insulation options.

In the UK, buildings with spray foam insulation are at least 50% more effective in avoiding energy loss by air infiltration. Spray foam insulation also helps protect against the growth of mould or mildew, and wood decay.

Icynene spray foam can easily be added between the timber frame structure to provide a tightly sealed airtight structure that does not rot or settle over time, maintaining a high level of efficiency over the lifetime of the building.

interior wall spray foam insulation

Interior Walls

Want cold and damp to be a thing of the past on your walls? Do you want to have quiet inside your home? Insulating the interior walls can be of great help.

When people talk about insulating walls, they usually think of outside walls to shield their home. Ifspray can install injection foam inside your home without taking down the current drywall. Our expert team must cut holes into the wall stud cavities to insert the injection foam.

We'll clean up any mess after ourselves and patch the wall where the holes were drilled. Then a final polish should be given and the wall repainted. When your drywall is down and the wall cavity is exposed, open-cell spray foam can be used in such a situation. Contact Ifspray today for more detail.

Floor Insulation

Spray foam insulation prevents noise from entering from the floors above, below, or adjacent rooms inside a building.

Using hair dryers, telephones, office computers, printers, washing machines, laundry dryers, blenders, juicers, coffee grinders, television sets (for music and sport), flushing toilets, running baths, walking on the upper floors and playing and performing on a musical instrument are just a few types of noise that are often created in a system. Spray foam insulation can significantly reduce these noises.

Spray foam insulation prevents airborne noise propagation by covering and closing any space and crevice through which sounds can pass. It is both durable and filled with millions of minute air bubbles that not only withstand the sounds of concrete and wooden components, but also avoid sound transmission through the floor.

There is no doubt that spray foam is the ultimate insulator, based on pure R-value. And finding the right insulation for your particular property isn’t as simple as having one with the highest R-value on the box. You will need to weigh important factors such as your total budget, possible safety risks, the environmental regulations of your city, and the amount of room in your attic.

If you want an effective, environmentally friendly and long-term solution to condensation or insulation issues, then spray foam is ideal for you. This is one of the best types of insulating materials for almost every property.

When misapplied, the SPI can put pressure on the structure of your property and damage your home. The isocyanate and resin reaction produces poisonous fumes. The installer must wear a face mask to avoid inhaling fumes and make sure that you and others leave the area. If your installer doesn’t do this, the fumes can be very harmful to your health.

Certainly not. Since most Lapolla spray foam products are considered chemically inert, they do not change, either chemically or physically.

Thanks to their air sealing properties, Lapolla spray foams are considered environmentally friendly items that lead to improved indoor air quality, decreased energy use and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Lapolla’s open-cell foam insulation solution allows vapour molecules to pass through the foam. It ensures that any moisture in the concrete or wood of the building will escape as the building dries out, eliminating moisture that could cause mould or rot. The closed-cell foam insulation of Lapolla materials can withstand bulk water and avoid moisture transfer that can cause mould.

A spray-applied, closed-cell polyurethane foam solution that blends superior insulation qualities with no air permeability in one application, to provide long-lasting, effective protection which improves occupants’ health and comfort, with added bonuses such as energy efficiency and safety.

Icynene spray foam lacks dangerous blowing agents such as HFAs, HCFCs, or HFCs. However, most Icynene spray foam insulating materials are fully water-blown to improve the atmosphere. The main source of its ingredients is organic petroleum extracts.
